Tape art

Be creative with tape

Street art with the pupils

During this lesson, our teacher Brigitte made us an introduction about street art. It was really interesting to see all the current street art creations in the world and how people express their thoughts and ideas by using all sorts of material that are out of the ordinary. At that moment a lot of ideas came up to me to do with the pupils. Indeed, I realized that street art is a simple way of doing art with the pupils and that we had many possiblities to allow pupils to be creative and spread out their thoughts and imagination by using simple material. Working on street art with the pupils can be very useful to talk about a school topic or any other topic and even raise awareness concerning different social or environmental problems. For example, I thought that creating objects out of recycled materials could be a wonderful project to show the pupils how anything can be reused to produce something new and beautiful. This kind of project could also lead to discussions in class about sustainabilty. However, we learned that if we work on street art with the kids we always have to make sure that what has be created can be removed.

Creative post-its

To introduce us in a simple way to street art, Brigitte asked us to use a colourful stamp to create a drawing on a post-it and stick it wherever we wanted in the city. This is a way to show us how easy and quick it is possible to do street art with the pupils. Also, I think it is a nice opportunity for the pupils to express their feelings or any other thoughts to people anonymously.

The "talking" house

Our teacher also showed us a video of a danish music group using several materials that were put in different ways on a house facade to create a "talking" house with a mouth and eyes. I wanted also to post the video because I really liked the montage and how they combined the music with the working process.

The crazy washing line

At the end of the lesson we were told to do some art with tape. Indeed, Brigitte told us to start our work from a washing line made out of tape. We all started creating funny things with tape but also coloured tape, that were hanging on the washing line. I was so surprised how creative we were and how quick the ideas came to each of us. Also, we had the chance to have some music on the background which, I think, helped us to get inspired and focus our mind into the task. That day the weather was rainy and I also could observe how it had an impact on our imagination. Some of us created rain drops, blizzards or clowds which showed me how the environment influences us in our actions. For me this activity was very fun and calm at the same time. I could feel how concentrated and how inspired we all were.

This is really an activity I would do with my class because it is really easy and quick to do. It brings the pupils to see how creative they can be with so very little and common material. Also, it could be an activity to redecorate the classroom by using the windows. It would be an opportunity for the pupils to develop different artistic skills but also build a group complicity by having a fun goal to achieve all together.
