The sound stories - 18.04.18

Act the sound !

Create a thunderstorm

Today we started our lesson by creating a thunderstorm with our body. I really liked to experience this moment because the sound we made with our fingers, our hands and our legs remembered me of a real thunderstorm in the summer which made me feel good and cosy. Indeed, it is at that specific moment that I realized how the sound could wake up my feelings and my senses by transporting me to another context. I then understood how important and how useful it could be to use different sounds whithin the teaching because it allows the pupils to get into the learning process in a new and meaningful way.

The use of sounds in class

Since I have been following this creative module here in Denmark, I realized how many different and creative ways I could use, as a teacher, to bring the students to express themselves in other and new ways.  From now on it is important for me to be able to use a multimodal litteracy in my teaching because I believe in variety and I want to use it in order to give a chance the students to learn and develop themeselve in their suitable and natural way. The use of sound in class can be used as a tool to learn from a subject like different music instruments. A nice example that has been given to us in class to make the pupils learn the different instruments is the use of "Peter and the wolf". This way of using the sound of music is efficient for the pupils to remember how the instruments sound like because there is a story behind which makes the association between instruments and sound better and easier.

Soundstories

But the most interesant part part of the lesson was to creat a sound story. We were all told to record an everyday life sound which was going to be used as a support and animation to our story. We recorded different sounds such as camera shots, birds' song, footsteps, paper cut, boiling water, dishes, shutting doors and more. After listening to all of our recorded sounds we already could imagine some story scenes. At that moment I realized how fast we associated sounds with possible actions in a story. One person started giving an idea and we gradually came up with a story told by one narrator and animated with different sounds.

The story

On a nice day of summer a young girl was biking (bike wheels sound), she decided to take some pictures of the beautiful landscape that surrounded her with her new camera (camera shots sound). Suddenly, she lost the control of her bike (bike crash sound) and got injured on her knee. Her knee was swolen and bleeding so she decided to look for some help around. She saw a little wooden house in the distance and decided to approach it. She knocked at the door (knocking door sound) but no one answered. Then she decided to open the door (opening the door sound) and enter the house. She noticed how dark it was in the house so she tried to put the light on (turning light on sound). As she was walking through the big hallway she heard some strange sounds (dishes sound). She really started to be affraid and decided to walk back to the front door when suddenly an old and nice lady approached her (voice sounds) asking her if she needed some help.
