The roulette - fairy tale - 7.03.2018

Play the roulette ! A fairy tale.

Today we learned a new and creative way for the pupils to invent fairy tales. In groups of four we received a little board with four columns : place, main character, problem and help. The idea was to fill in each column with six different ideas. After that, each of us had to throw the dice and select the noun depending of the number that came out. With the selected words, we had to build up a fairy tale. As we already knew the structure of a fairy tale it was easy for us to find an idea for each part and use the selected words to make our story evolve. I really liked our way of working together because I felt our imagination flow and each of us came up with an idea that was added to another. This activity could be proposed in class after an introduction of fairy tales' structure in order to practice this text type. Also, the fact that the words are already given before thanks to the dice, the pupils are able to have a better support and build more easily the story.

Our fairy tale

Our fairy tale was about a little fairy (main character) that was starving (problem) and needed some food. She knew that there was a troll village (place) nearby and as she didn't really like trolls, she decided to steal their food storage. She entered the village during the night and stole all the food using her magic powers to transport it to her place. The smart cat (help) that lived in a cat's palace on the clouds saw the whole scene during the night. The next day the trolls woke up without any food and were wondering who could have done such a thing. The smart cat, which is a honest cat, decided to tell the truth to the trolls and gave them a plan to get their food back. As the cat had a good relationship with the fairy, he proposed to invite her to his palace and make the trolls come at that moment. The next day, the little fairy was invited to the cat's palace but the trolls were waiting for her to have a conversation. The trolls told her that if she had come to them and ask for food they would have given it to her. When she realized how nice and generous they were, she felt really ashamed of herself. The trolls decided to give her the food and from that day the fairy always thought that she should "never judge a book by its cover".
